Coaching Under God

This below was developed when I faced some challenges from my staff when I was a head coach on a college coaching staff, and I sensed the Holy Spirit telling me to “get the house in order”.
This articulation below resulted from what I considered God’s correction of my thinking.

When I hired all of you I believe that I made one simple request, that you “do what I ask”
And I am only asking of everyone else……………what the holy spirit has asked of me
And what the Lord has said to me is, “DO WHAT I ASK, on every matter”

I am attempting to do what I think he asks of me with this football program
He has made CLEAR, as I have been trying to make clear to you, that his ways are not our ways

CONSEQUENTLY WE WILL BE UNCONVENTIONAL and UNSOUND

BOTTOM LINE #1

We are not going to win the natural way, so please understand that I am not interested in what makes sense or what is normal or what works in my mind or your mind or from any of our experience

We are going to win the supernatural way, which will be UNSOUND AND UNCONVENTIONAL
So please get used to it

And things are only going to get MORE UNSOUND
It IS going to be HIS WAY……………..which is going to be MY WAY
Because I am going to do it HIS WAY, as best I can tell
and whether it makes sense or is comfortable to any of us is a non-factor and I will not consider
what do I mean by unconventional and unsound?
I mean in regards to EVERYTHING
And in particular, I mean in regards to any practice or especially game planning or game day decisions
I may change my mind on anything at any moment during a practice week or game
I may say on DEFENSE
we will blitz very down
or we will play only zone
or we will play a 9 man front
or Bob or Steve will play every play
I may say on OFFENSE
We will run every down
Or we will pass every down
Or Tim or Mike will play every down
I may say on SPECIAL TEAMS
We will onside kick every time
Or we will run only this return or that return this week
You may do all your homework and all your game-planning and I may throw it out on game day
Your job is to prepare.
My job is to make the final decisions on all matters
Sometimes I will ask for an opinion
Sometimes I will not
When I do not, that is because I have already made the decision
In the heat of battle, we will not discuss strategy unless I open the floor for debate
Otherwise, we will debrief post-game on any necessary decisions
However, during the game, it will go in whichever way I see it, and I will take the responsibility for anything and everything that blows up
And I am not going to soften on this position, unless the lord so directs
Otherwise, I am only going to get more hard-headed and stubborn in every way
And my chin is getting harder and harder in this regard
you have to decide whether I am obeying god
you have to decide whether I know what I am doing
you have to decide if you want to stay or go, now or in the future
you all have a choice
You are welcome to come along for the ride
Or if anyone wishes to go now, I will pay their full salary through the season (November payment)
however, this is the way it is going to be
I don’t care about my reputation
I don’t care about the programs reputation
All I care about is obeying god, to the best of my ability
That is my only agenda
BOTTOM LINE #2
this is a great experiment
And I am fully aware it may blow up in my face, and consequently in your face
BOTTOM LINE #3
This is not about football

It is about changing…………………….all of us, changing
After my Saturday/Sunday post-game evaluation
I am more encouraged than ever that we are doing the right things the right way
We will continue to jump off the cliff
There is a good chance we will crash and burn
I am willing to take that risk
God is going to change us all forever
ATTEMPT SOMETHING SO BIG THAT THERE IS NO CHANCE OF SUCCESS
                APART FROM JESUS CHRIST
