Praying the Promises of God

POWER OF PRAYING PARENT

THE GOOD NEWS

God has given everything we need for life and godliness (2 pet 1:3

All promises are yes and amen in jesus – 2 cor 1:20

I John 5:14-15 – This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.

Then the question is – WHAT IS GOD’S WILL

SAVED – born again (1st timothy 2:4)

SANCTIFIED – clean, holy (I peter 1:15-16)

Spirit filled – Ephesians 5:18

Submissive – to god and man – james 4:7 and Ephesians 5:21

Suffering –

PROBLEM #1 – do we pray for god’s will or our will (comfort / preferences) = SELFISH VS SELFLESS

NATURAL – WE WANT TO BE BLESSED

To be BLESSED does not mean nothing bad ever happen to children

Protection – yes  provision – yes  – NOT MEAN COMFORTABLE

In fact – suffering is god’s will –

Hebrews 2:10 –jesus made perfect through suffering

Hebrews 5:7-9 – jesus learned obedience by what he suffered

Romans 5:3-5 – suffering produces perseverance, character, hope

James 1:2-4 – suffering so can be mature and complete

God came to make us holy, not happy, to be blessed and not comfortable

PROBLEM WITH PRAYERS

James 4:2-3 – You want something but don’t get it. You do not have, because you do not ask God. 3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. (OR COMFORTS, OR WHAT’S FUN – OPPOSITE OF GOD’S WILL – DRIVEN BY AVOIDANCE OF PAIN)

QUESTIONS

IS GOD GOOD?

DOES HE KNOW WHAT IS BEST FOR US

DO WE WANT GOD’S WILL?

ARE WE AFRAID OF WHAT GOD’S WILL IS?

TWO BIGGEST PRAYERS

1) help

2) god’s will be done

WE CAN PRAY SPECIFICALLY HIS WILL – saved, sanctified, godly

PRAY GENERALLY GODS WILL – think want new car, house, job

  • nevertheless, not my will but yours be done

PROBLEM #2  – WHAT HINDERS PRAYER = SIN

Disobedience (want to do evil) – I peter 3:12

Mistreat your mate – I peter 3:7 and Ephesians 5:22-24

Busy / out of control – I peter 4:7

Unconfessed sin – psalms 66:18-19

Unforgiveness, bitterness and resentment – matthew 6:14-15

OTHERS – pride and rebellion, immorality, shame

BAD NEWS – sin blocks prayer

GOOD NEWS –

jesus came to forgive sin and wipe it out (I john 1:9 and acts 3:19)

jesus came to set the captives free –isaiah 61:1

jesus came that we might be pure and blameless (phil 1:10 and 2:15)

BY CONFESSION AND REPENTANCE

PRAYERS – promises of god – w things leave alone (why/when = mystery)

Our job is to pray – his job is to work the timing

Q over Q (quantity of force over quantity of time) – luke 18 (persistent widow)

THE POWER OF BELIEF

Believe and you will be saved (acts 16:31)

Have whatever you ask for in prayer (mark 11:22-24)

He could not do any miracles there (mark 6:4-6)

I believe; help my unbelief – mark 9:24

Mustard seed – matthew 17:20

  • sign that “enough” faith is that you pray (mustard seed – help)

Romans 4:18-22 – Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, “So shall your offspring be. Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead —since he was about a hundred years old —and that Sarah’s womb was also dead. Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised. This is why “it was credited to him as righteousness.”

BOTTOM LINE

I John 5:14-15 – This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.
